A Special (Pet Therapy) Angel

One of our pet therapy teams was recently recognized by Doctor’s Hospital of Sarasota for their work! According to Dee, the human member of the pet therapy team, Cappy [the canine member] received a Bravo Award from Doctors [sic] Hospital yesterday. In the beginning of March [2015] he visited a patient that obviously loved it as she wrote the attached poem. The fourth floor Clinical & Nursing managers presented this time & a group photo was taken. There was also an individual photo taken of him that now resides on the bulletin board with the rest of the staff….!!! I am so very proud of him.”

Bravo award for Cappy

This is the poem that the thoughtful, inspired patient wrote about Cappy:

Pet Therapy Suncoast Humane Society

The poem is as follows:

A Special Angel

As my day began, unexpected stress began too;

From frustration and worry, my heart was soon blue…

So I questioned God why… this health situation;

With tears flowing freely, I asked for some inspiration…

Then shortly thereafter, I heard a small whimper and cry;

From somewhere nearby, which soon caught my eye…

Into my hospital room, came this small little friend;

A four-legged angel, that God knew to send…

He spoke not a word, just warm cuddling his plan,

To stop all my tears, with his tiny paw in my hand…

“Captain” his sweet name, stayed briefly it’s true;

Detecting my need for comfort, to refresh me anew…

One of “God’s Special Angels,” I know Captain must be;

A small dog showing compassion, for my heart to see…

That words don’t need spoken, to encourage one’s heart;

For love freely shared, today did its part…

Captain came to visit to cheer many today;

And without any words, here’s what he did say;

Love all and each other, our lives can all teach;

That caring and encouragement, is always in reach.

Pekingnese in Dog Training Classes

Train with your pooch in one of our family friendly dog training classes!

Get your dog ready for summer’s fun activities by completing a training course with him! We are hosting canine training courses at the South Venice Civic Association building. The classes will be on Thursday evenings starting April 2 and ending May 7, 2015.

As part of the Second Level Training class, your dog will take a 10-step Canine Good Citizen test on the sixth week of the course. The evaluation includes Accepting Friendly Strangers, Walking Through a Crowd, Reaction to Other Dogs and Distractions, Supervised Separation, and Grooming. Donate, shop – help animals!

Justin SHS Employee Lifting Donated Items November 2013

By Executive Director Phil Snyder

Published in the Englewood Sun on March 22, 2015

Is your home ready for a spring cleaning? Maybe you are about to head back to your other home in the Northlands. Either way, you may want to go through your closets, garage or storage unit and unload some of those household and other items for which you no longer have a use.

You may not realize that your “used to be’s” could be someone else’s treasure. This becomes a reality every day at the Suncoast Humane Society’s thrift stores, as people shop for bargains. And just think, the proceeds from its three stores benefit the services, programs, and homeless animals entrusted to the care of the organization.

Gently used furniture, small appliances, household goods, books, artwork, one-of-a-kind knickknacks and more are accepted.

The society’s thrift stores are located in the Rialto Shopping Center in Venice, the Englewood Shopping Center in Englewood, and the Village Marketplace in Port Charlotte. A pickup and delivery service is provided for sizable and large numbers of items.

If you are clearing out some things and find quality items to donate, please bring them to the thrift stores during their regular hours of operation, or call 941-876-3773 to schedule a pickup.

The thrift stores also provide great volunteer opportunities, assisting with a variety of fun activities. These include sorting, arranging, and pricing the items. Volunteer applications are available at the Suncoast Humane Society or at any of the three thrift stores. You can apply to become a volunteer online at www.humane.org.

So take a look around. You may just find some things to help you downsize while enjoying that great feeling that you are helping animals.

Easy Way to Donate to our Pet Pantry Program

20150119_141552

Our Pet Pantry Program serves financially struggling families with pets by temporarily providing them with free pet food. This program helps pets stay with their families and works in conjunction with our Pet Placement Program in this way. The success of this program is based on the donations we receive from people and businesses in our community! To help make donating to this vital program convenient, you can drop off your pet food donations at any of our satellite adoption centers in Englewood, North Port, Port Charlotte, and Venice. Since these satellite adoption centers are open 7 days a week, you will be able to generously donate pet food any day of the week! Give us a call at 941-474-7884 if you have any questions about our Pet Pantry Program.

Don’t Can It! Bring Your Aluminum Cans Here.

aluminum can donations suncoast humane society

One of our less well-known fundraising programs is our aluminum recycling program, which raised over $1,500 in 2014! All you do is drop off your aluminum cans in the recycling receptacle at our animal care center in Englewood. Then our recycling partner Don’s Recycling picks up and processes the cans for us and sends us a check for their scrap value. If you drop off your aluminum cans with us, you will be helping our programs, services, and homeless pets while helping the environment as well! It’s a win-win for us both. Give us a call at 941-474-7884 if you have any other questions about this program and how it benefits us here at Suncoast Humane Society!
