Dogs About Town

Helping Shelter Dogs Find Homes

Here at Suncoast Humane Society, we try to use all available methods to find our pets forever homes. Of course, we have our live website, which features listings of all currently adoptable pets. We post adoptable pets on our social media, as well as send adoptable pet photos and information to local newspapers, businesses, and radio stations who generously post, publish, and speak about these pets seeking homes. But nothing can replace the excitement and feeling of an event. That’s why our staff decided to begin our Dogs About Town program!

Each week, we feature one or more adoptable dogs at a local dog-friendly business or organization. Our Animal Behaviorist Jorge Villada along with a volunteer accompany the dogs to the event location and help introduce them to passersby. The dogs love meeting new people, and we’re pretty sure that the people who stop to say hi like them too! The dogs also wear bright yellow vests with “Adopt Me” and the Suncoast Humane Society logo on them. The color looks great and really pops on all of our different colors of dog fur! Along with our dressed up dogs, Jorge and our volunteer bring along information on our programs and services like our low cost preventive health care clinic and information on other currently adoptable dogs.

When the Dogs About Town program first started in November 2013, our first outing was at The Loose Caboose, a restaurant on the island of Boca Grande. Max, a Border Collie/Labrador Retriever mix, had been waiting for his human to come find him for more than 7 months. An interested adopter met with Max the day before he went on the inaugural Dogs About Town outing, but decided he needed time to decide if Max was the right fit for his household. Max ended up going to The Loose Caboose (on Boca Grande) the next day, which is the same town where the potential adopter he had met the day before lives! After seeing Max out at the restaurant for lunch, the adopter knew that Max would be just the right dog for him. Jeff is now Max’s new dad!

Besides visiting pet stores like Pet Supermarket in Englewood, Venice and North Port, Petco in Port Charlotte, Petsmart in Port Charlotte; restaurants like The Loose Caboose, Englewood’s on Dearborn, Bobarino’s Pizzeria, and Lucky Dog Diner; and retail stores like Gulf Coast True Value and Island Dog Boutique, our Dogs About Town program also reaches an ENTIRE town during our monthly participation in WENG Radio‘s All About Pets program the third Monday of each month. A different adoptable dog comes with us to this monthly program, like Blake below:

Since the inception of this program in November 2013, more than 80 dogs have found their homes after going out on a Dogs About Town event, making this event more than just a great socialization event for our adoptable dogs. Stay tuned on our website and Facebook page each week to see where our adoptable dogs and we will be!
